Black Expats in Japan

The history of Japan is both rich and ancient. It is often difficult to place the many historical sites in Japan in time. It is one of the worlds largest economic powers based on their GDP. It is an archipelago of more than 6,800 islands in the Pacific Ocean. The main islands are, from north to south: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, which together represent 97% of the total surface of Japan. It is one of the best countries for African American ex-pats due to the pleasing temperate climate and extremely low crime rates.

Transportation

Domestic Flights: In Japan, sometimes domestic flights are very competitive! The region also has many low-cost airlines like Jetstar, Skymark Airlines, and Peach Airlines.

Car: Reaching countryside villages and mountains is not always accessible by train. Hence, Japan offers several rental vehicles for less than 50 Euros per day, as well as a dozen suggested itineraries.

Train: Train travel is often the best value for money. The rail pass allows you to take all the lines of the Japan Railway (JR) company, which covers a good part of the Japanese territory.

International Flight: Nearly all major airlines and airports offer flights to Japan. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways (ANA) are two main airlines of Japan both serve a broad range of international destinations.

Accomodation

1. Japan is considered one of the best countries for black ex-pats. If you want to relocate to Japan as a Black ex-pat, remember that it is customary to pay the equivalent of six months’ rent when you rent a home.

2. The first two months constitute the “shikikin” which is the refundable deposit at the end of the lease.

3. The other two months represent the “reikin”, a kind of gift given to the owner when you move in.

4. Finally, you have to pay the first month’s rent before you can move in.

5. In Tokyo, the average cost of living for a single adult is around is around 140,000-194,000 yen/pm or $1,268-$1750. In smaller cities much less.

Neighborhood

Tokyo is the safest city in the world and Osaka is the third. The beauty of Japan magnetizes travelers around the world and it is also a favorite destination for black women. Though Living in Tokyo and Osaka is relatively expensive for the average expatriate. Many African Americans find it easy to settle in more or less important cities of Japan such as Sapporo, located in the Hokkaido region. It offers the possibility of skiing or snowboarding in winter and exploring the beauty of nature, in the island, during the summer.

Cost of living

The cost of living in Japan is not what some people think it is. It is not necessarily higher than in France, even in Tokyo. As a foodie you can eat for relatively affordable prices, especially in restaurants. There are good deals to be mindful of, just like everywhere, but it will be difficult to cut the inevitable expenses which are transport and rent. Also, it is a country of shopping and fashion, and sometime leads to overconsumption by new Black expats; you will be tempted absolutely everywhere, day and night. However, the cost of living is in proportion to the wages and if you put in a lot of hours at work (say a full time of 40h per week) then you will probably have a better quality of life here than you would have in France...
